Majoone Falasfa

Majoone Falasfa is a compound Unani drug. It is also called Madaat-ul-Hayaat i.e. Elixir of life. This grug was invented by a ancient Greek physician, Indrumakhas (Andromachos, the elder, court physician to King Nero). This compound drug was originally preapared for the intellectuals and people doing hard mental work, hence named Majoone Falasfa (A majoon for philosopher).

Majoone Falasfa contains thirteen ingredients, which is used as tonic for vital organs (Heart, Liver, Brain, Kidney, Gonads), antidiuretic,aphrodisiac, appetizer, digestive, semenagogue, carminative, stomachic, lithotriptic, deobstruent, anti-arthritis, and tonic for gall bladder. It is used in senile dementia and to delay ageing.

the original preparation of Majoone Falasfa contained only ten herbal ingredients viz,Filfil Siyah (P. nigrum), Filfil Daraz ( P. longum), Zanjabeel(Z. officinalis), Darchini (C. zeylanicum), Kundur (B. serrata),Balela ( T. belerica), Amla (E. officinalis), Chilghoza ( P.gerardiana), Sheetraj (P. zeylanica) and Babuna (M.chamomilla) but, there are certain variations regarding the weight and number of ingredients of the compound in different Unani formulations. The formula for preparation of Majoone Falasfa in National Formulary ofUnani Medicine (NFUM) contains thirteen ingredients in sugar or honey base.

Action: It is antidiuretic, semenagogue, aphrodisiac, digestive, appetizer, carminative, stomachic, lithotriptic and deobstruent.

Indication: It is used as general tonic, cardiac tonic, nervine tonic, tonic for gall bladder and kidney, anti-arthritic, especially in backache and joint pain in large joints. It is also indicated for use in phlegmatic diseases. It helps for strengthening of gums and teeth. It is being used for enhancing memory, in dementia and in memory impairment. This is also used in elderly to delay effect of ageing.

Dosage and Administration: 5-10 g. in the morning or at bed time with 250 ml. of milk, oral administration.
